From Fat to Fit – The downs, the ups and running ‘The Paleo Way’

A brief interruption to holiday programming to up date you on how I’ve been going in my Fat to Fit Series.

Since the start of the year I have been documenting my journey back to my ‘old self’ since the birth of my second Gorge Bag child in Mid December.

You can read how it all started here, where I explained the background and what I was aiming to do.

I have had some ups and downs since I started. I started off mentally strong and super motivated to get back to full fitness and lose the baby weight. I did my own circuits around the park with baby bear while the (original) Bear was in Kinder or crèche and while I did keep that up, I began to struggle after a few weeks.

The sheer lack of sleep coupled with looking after a very busy 3 year old who was, let’s just say ‘adjusting’ to the new addition and leave it at that!, coupled with having no family around to help at all meant I struggled to manage day to day let alone fit in any exercise. I was eating crap, kidding myself that I needed the extra calories for breastfeeding and I actually put on more weight after the birth. On top of feeling like a rubbish mum for not being able to cope, I also started to feel rubbish when I looked in the mirror – all I saw was a big fat milking machine. Not pretty.

That was the down.

Then there was the up. Read more…

I finally managed to make a *triumphant*!#! return  to parkrun.
For those not in the know, parkrun is a free timed 5km run that started off in the UK and now takes place in many destinations Australia wide as well as other destinations worldwide.

It’s been a while so I took husb along with me for moral support as I wasn’t sure how long it would take me to do it and didn’t want everyone to have gone home before I finished.
I thought that this would be a good start to my half marathon training giving me a base to start from.

Now it may *look* like I am standing still but I can assure you I WAS running! Honest.

I found it ok and managed to get round in 35 minutes so certainly not very fast and waaaay off my fastest time BUT I ran it all and that was my aim. At least I have a starting point now and I can work my way onwards and upwards from this point.

We also took the kids swimming in the afternoon (first time for baby Bear) and I managed to fit a sneaky 10 lengths in.

All in all a pretty great week as far as achievements go I think.

Photo a run challenge

As you may know by now, I am a (relatively) regular parkrunner and I have previously regaled you with my highly embarrassing entertaining! running stories about my weekly 5Ks around Albert Park in Melbourne. What was that? You would like to read those stories again? But of course. As you can see when I run, it is never plain sailing!

Today’s park run was a bit different to the usual because as well as getting father-in-law in on it too. (I am like a one woman recruitment machine). The Melbourne Grand Prix also takes place in Albert Park so there is currently a flurry of activity going on Read more…

parkrun Aussie Style

The family have been here for 3 weeks now and things seem to be settling down quite nicely. Sis and mother are now well and truly over their jetlag which is good (although not for sis who now has no excuse to stay in bed in the morning or go for an afternoon nap – lack of excuse doesn’t seem to stop her though!)
Sister appears to be treating her holiday as some form of self imposed boot camp and when she is not dragging me to gym classes, or doing parkrun, she is nagging me to do my kettlebell DVD at home. Now don’t get me wrong I think it is great to be so motivated but I wish she would stop making me feel bad by being so crazy enthusiastic all the time. So far we’ve done parkrun, Jennifer Ellison’s (ex UK soap star) DVD, Kettlebells, Zumba, swimming and BodyPump. I am shattered just listing those. In all honesty it is good though to be out and about doing things and making the most of the Great Aussie Summer while the UK freezes in the snow. Don’t get me wrong I love the snow, but the snow has its place, like when I am at the top of an Alp about to ski down, not so much when I have to commute to work (or anywhere) when all public transport has ground to a halt and there is a general ‘snowmaggedan’.

Festive Frolics Down Under

Merry Christmas one and all I hope you had a relaxing time full of your own brand of festive frolics. Our first Christmas Down Under has now been and gone, there were some similarities and the inevitable differences between here and the UK.
I’d like to say that the days leading up to the Big Day were full of the usual preparations, mad present buying, last minute wrapping, last minute ingredient buying, but I won’t because they weren’t. Instead we did this… Read more…
